Chris Meloni: ‘SVU’ Has ‘Never Looked Better, Or Younger’

A funny thing happened when NBC opted not to renew the original ‘Law & Order’ for a 21st season – the crime drama’s original offshoot, ‘SVU,’ became the old kid on the ‘L&O’ block.
“We’re the wisened old pros,” concurs Christopher Meloni, who plays Detective Elliot Stabler. “But we’ve never looked better, or younger.”
Speaking with Fancast at P.F. Chang’s Home Menu Frozen Moments pre-Emmys gifting lounge, Meloni joked that ‘SVU’s secret to staying fresh was “Botox.” In actuality, though, the series has a few new tricks up its sleeve as its 12th season premiere nears on September 22.
For one, there’s a new ADA on the scene, played by ‘Precious’ star Paula Patton. Though Meloni has yet to work with the new addition (she doesn’t surface until Episode 5), “All the whispering says that she’s hot,” he shares. “And she’s a fantastic actress.”
There’s also a remodeled squad room on the way, when one of this season’s early episode makes a ruins of the old digs.
Also freshening things up is the casting of ‘Lost’ charmer Henry Ian Cusick as an ex-Marine and graphic artist who could prove to be a love interest for Detective Olivia Benson (played by Emmy nominee Mariska Hargitay).
Meloni was mum on that storyline, except to say that Stabler should be fine with any somethin’-somethin’ that surfaces ‘tween Stabler’s partner and this enigmatic newcomer. “It’s OK. She needs it,” the actor says with a wink. “It’s OK.”
Asked if any new personal drama might be on tap for Stabler this season, Meloni waved off the suggestion. “We’re geared up with issues-oriented shows at the beginning,” he said. “I guess we’ll get into the more personal stuff later.”
