www.tvguide.com/News/SVU-Season-13-1036245.aspx When Law & Order: Special Victims Unit returns, the show will hark back to earlier seasons, Diane Neal says. "It's back on track to what the original SVU was intended to be, which is about sex crimes and crimes against children," Neal says. "It's got more of a nitty-gritty feel." Neal, who plays ADA Casey Novak, left the series after Season 9, but returned for one episode last year and will be back for more in the upcoming Season 13. She says having her and Stephanie March (Alex Cabot) back provides a familiarity for viewers now that original cast member Chris Meloni is gone. "I think they should put us in the court room together!" she says about March. In the interview below, Neal talks about the on-set vibe with the new detectives played by Danny Pino and Kelli Giddish and why she hopes Novak will never change. The new season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit premieres Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 10/9c on NBC.

I love Alex Calbot. I sort of didn't like the character of Casey. Sorry to Casey fans. I think Alex was always the best lawyer and they should have her stay forever.

I think a lot of people feel that way, Heather, and I don't really blame them. After Alex left the way she did, the time they spent actually developing Casey's character quickly went from a little bit at the beginning, to zilch for some time before she left. She was very abrasive at the beginning, and for fans who were saddened by Alex leaving, it wasn't a very welcome thing. Some people were able to look past the writer's poor character development (I personally love what little bit of personality they gave to her), but a lot weren't. I'm hoping that starting over with new writers is going to bring back some of the season 2-6 feel to the show, as Diane eludes to, which it desperately needs. Personally, I wish they would bring back Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, who were writers and executive story editors on the show from seasons 2 to the beginning of 7 (where we started to lose the best parts of the show). They were responsible for most of my absolute favorite episodes, and have worked together on other shows that I loved, like Reaper and Dollhouse. They would bring some old-season life back into this show.

I am looking forward to the new season.
