Some interesting casting news here; Mike Tyson will play a murderer on death row in an upcoming episode (set to air February 13). There's been a bit of controversy about this appearance, since Tyson is known for being violent and was actually convicted of rape in 1992. The back and forth has taken place largely on Twitter, with Executive Producer Warren Leight weighing in as well. More on this at examiner.com.

Here is the reason NBC moved "Monster's Legacy" back to Feb.6th.
tvline.com/2013/01/31/svu-moves-mike-tyson-episode-from-rape-event/#more-402286 Law & Oder: SVU Moves Mike Tyson Episode Away from Rape Survivor Event
by Matt Webb MitovichJan. 31st, 2013NBC has moved the airdate for a Law & Order: SVU episode guest-starring convicted rapist Mike Tyson up a week, to Feb. 6, lest it fall the day before One Billion Rising, a nationwide event protesting rape and other violence against women. The casting of Tyson — who in 1992 was convicted of raping an 18-year-old Miss Black American pageant contestant, and served three years (of a six-year sentence) in prison for the crime — spurred controversy from the get-go, eliciting at least one petition to have his role recast. (Tyson, the Washington Post‘s TV Column reports, is playing a death row inmate who murdered a man who abused him as a child.)Tyson addressed the Change.org petition (which was started by rape survivor Marcie Kaveney and at last count amassed 11,600 signatures) in a TV Guide Magazine interview, saying, “I’m sorry that [Kaveney] has a difference of opinion, but she’s entitled to it. I’m sorry that she’s not happy [but] I didn’t rape nobody or do anything like that, and this lady wasn’t there to know if I did or not.” (Tyson always maintained his 1991 encounter with the pageant contestant was consensual.)“I’m not trying to get rich and famous; I’m just trying to feed my family,” he added. “I’m clean and sober five years, I haven’t broken any laws or did any crimes. I’m just trying to live my life.”For information on how you can be involved with the One Billion Rising event on Feb. 14, visit OneBillionRising.org.

See now, I can appreciate the move by NBC, but at the same time it seems like they're also acknowledging that they might have made a mistake in casting Tyson. Obviously they shouldn't concentrate on controversy for controversy's sake, but it seems like they aren't quite understanding people's concerns like they should.

IMO the casting of Tyson was completely misguided. Understandably, Mariska has remained silent on this issue but inside she must be steaming. She probably has a gag order in her contract and can't say anything against this without serious repercussions. In this case Silence truly is golden.

I'm not sure how I should feel about MT being cast. Not sure why SVU cast him anyways. I'm pretty sure that there were other incidents (can't think of them at the moment) where they did recast a role due to certain circumstances to avoid a big controversy.
I read an article where MT said that 'Mariska was quiet on set and he knew she was the boss'. I think it was the Huffingtion Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/30/mike-tyson-svu-controversy_n_2579207.html). I just get the feeling (from that interview) that Mariska really didn't want him there. Basically she was sucking it up and doing her job.

Hello all I am new here. I usually don't post to much on discussion boards, but this is one of my favorite shows so I had to finally join one. I wanted to weigh in on this topic. I am still conflicted as to whether or not I will watch this episode. I don't feel that this is the right show for MT to have been cast on. However that decision belongs to the powers that be. I think the reason we haven't heard much from the cast about the decision is they probably do have a type of gag oreder in their contracts. The only interview I have seen was on youtube and it was with Ice-T. I did read this morning on one site (the clicker, today? can't remember)that NBC was not allowing the cast to do interviews. I think that is very telling. I also found Tyson's remarks about Mariska to be telling also. In all the interviews I have watched and read about her never have I heard her being described as quiet. She has never struck me as being the quiet type. While we may never know what the cast memebers thought of this casting, I personally feel she was probably not to happpy with it. If that's the case I think it really speaks to her character that she can be faced with something like this and be profesional and do her job. I am looking forward to discovering new things on this board.

First, hi wvfan! Glad to have you aboard. It is certainly interesting that the cast has clearly kept quiet on this issue, and I only recall seeing a tweet or two from Warren Leight on the topic. It's certainly possible that it's in the casts' contracts that they should not be criticizing the show; I'm sure that it's probably a standard clause in media contracts. Doesn't look so good for your brand if people involved in the production don't support it! It will be interesting to see if ratings drop on this episode. SVU has been doing okay in the ratings, though it still came in behind a repeat of Modern Family last week... we'll see if there's any noticeable dips.

Hindsight is a b&%$h sometimes. I think the casting directors thought (in the beginning) this may be a good idea. But now...I think they are kicking themselves in the arses.
I know that this will be the episode that viwers (those that don't even watch the show) will remember the most. And that's sad in away. controversial epi with a controversial guest star. On the flip side, I think lots of people will be tuning in just to 'hate watch' which will in turn bring up their ratings. Double edge sword. Double Jepordy as I like to think of it.
Also, guess who will be on Katie tomorrow? That's right, Mike Tyson. Funny how that all worked out for him, eh? (yes...I am oozzing sarcasim).
Depending on if this epi is successful in what it is supposed to do, it could very well dictate how the rest of the season will go and probably if SVU gets signed for another season. I know I'm jumping the gun with that but I'm just thinking ahead. I'm a downer sometimes, I know...
