Chapter 1
This is my first story. It took me a while to write this, I hope you like it.
Chapter 1
There was something in the air today; Elliot could feel it, and it bothered him. He just knew it was going to be another day full of perversion. Fairly hopping into his car, he began his journey to the precinct. He usually didn’t relish the idea of getting to work early, but today, he could hardly wait to get there, everything seemed so bright and dark at the same time.He couldn’t understand but wouldn’t question. Everybody had these kinds of days once in a while, when out of nowhere a yellow corvette, going way too fast, hit him head on.
Olivia wondered where Elliot might be. He was never late for work. They saw Don heading their way knowing he probably had the same question on his mind, when suddenly he stopped as his cell phone began to trill. He answered it and his face went white.
“Oh God” he whispered.
“Where is he?”
“OK, Yes.”
“Is he going to be all right?”
“Oh Lord, OK, we will be right there”.
Something in Olivia’s stomach twisted and she knew. Elliot.
“What happened? What is it?” she cried getting up and walking to Don, even as he was quickly making his way toward her, John and Fin.
“It’s Elliot” he said shakily
“He’s been in a very serious car accident…they don’t know if he’s going to make it”.
A terrible hush fell over the precinct as the sad news was passed from person to person. Olivia had begun to sob quietly as John held her.
“Come on girl” he whispered.
“Let’s go, he’ll be alright, come on”. And so they all headed down to the hospital silently praying for Elliot.
When they arrived, they were immediately led to a secluded area. Don had already instructed Fin to get in touch with Elliot’s family. He knew they would be on their way soon. But for now, the small SVU staff was the only family he had since Kathy left him and so they made every effort to be strong for him. They sat in stunned silence as they waited for word of Elliot’s progress in surgery, each facing down their own poignant memories of the man now clinging to life. It all seemed so unreal.
As hard as she tried, Olivia could not stop crying. She didn’t want to upset everyone, but she just couldn’t wrap her mind around the idea that Elliot might leave them. She clung to John, who had barely spoken two words other than “it’s ok, it’s ok”, since they received the news.
Finally after 3 hours, the Doctor finally arrived. His face was tired, but not unkind as he introduced himself.
“I’m Doctor Sanchez” he announced with a half-smile. Don stepped up to shake his outstretched hand and to receive the news they all waited to hear.
“He came through the surgery well” the Doctor said calmly.
“He suffered internal bleeding, which we have repaired, as well as several broken bones and extensive lacerations”.
Soft exhalations of shock and sadness passed through the small group.
Doctor James continued.
“However, the most serious of his injuries was sustained when his air bag failed to deploy properly. There is some swelling of the brain which we have also attempted to alleviate by the insertion of a small drainage tube.
“Oh God” Olivia whispered, again clinging to John.
“Though his prognosis is good and we cannot readily see any permanent brain damage, unfortunately, as sometimes happens in cases of trauma to the brain, he has fallen into a coma”.
Don’s head shook back and forth.
“I can’t believe it” he whispered.
“Will he be all right?”
“As drastic as it sounds, coma may be the best state for him at this time. He may wake up in two hours or two days. In rare cases, the victim will remain comatose for longer periods, but we are hopeful that will not be the case with Mr. Stabler”.
The Doctor was indeed kind, and they were all grateful as he offered his card to Don telling him to call anytime, day or night if he needed to.
“Can we see him?” Olivia asked wiping away a tear, attempting to compose herself.
“Yes only one of you though, please” the Doctor warned. Oliva and Don exchanged glances. They all assumed Don would be the one to go, as he and Elliot had known each other for years, but something in Olivia’s face touched the Doctor and he amended his first statement saying it was OK if two people went in, as long as they did not disturb.
“Thank you” she whispered, grateful beyond words. It would of course be Oliva and Don.
