Prologue
Detective Olivia Benson laid on her living room couch. Bottles of every type of alcohol imaginable lay around her. She held a half empty bottle of vodka in her hands. She took another big sip of the vodka trying to get to that place where she couldn’t remember the pain she felt. Ever since that doctor had come out into the waiting room and told her Alex was dead she could hardly function right. She tried to stay together. The day after she had thrown herself into her work trying to convince herself that it wasn’t true. But Alex’s funeral had made it all too true. She completely fell apart and fell off the bandwagon completely. She began to drink again. Not just now and again but heavily. She was becoming the person she swore she would never be. But she had to wonder what was the use in living if she had nothing to live for. Scenes from the last time she saw Alex flashed through her mind. She tried to drown in out with another swig of Vodka but it came through loud and clear.
Olivia ran to her fallen girlfriend after radioing for a bus and trying to see who had shot her so she could kill them but they were long gone. She moved some of the blonde hair that had fallen in her eyes when she fell. Blood seeped through her shirt and was getting on Olivia’s hands and shirt.
“It’s going to be okay sweetie,” Olivia whispered just loud enough for only Alex to hear her.
Alex looked up at Olivia. Tears in her eyes. Fear printed on her gentle features. The pain was killing her.
“I love you,” Alex whispered for the first time.
Olivia was shocked when she said that. They had been dating for a couple weeks but neither had been able to voice the fact that they had fallen in love with the other. So for Olivia to hear this was just mind-boggling. But before she could say that she loved her back the paramedics were there and they were pushing her out of the way.
That was what killed her. She never said I love you back. She would never know now whether Alex knew that she felt the same way. Because Alex was dead. And with her death went a part of Olivia that could never be filled. Olivia heard her apartment door open and knew who it was. The only person who would have her key now that Alex was gone was her partner Elliot Stabler. Olivia took another swig of the vodka discovering that there was nothing left.
“Look at you.”
Olivia looked up from the empty bottle to her partner Elliot. Elliot took in Olivia’s disheveled hair and the clothes she was wearing. He looked around her apartment to find empty bottles of liqueur.
“Liv, I’m here to help,” Elliot said sitting next to her on the couch.
He had suspected that Olivia and the former Assistant District Attorney Alex Cabot had been dating. But he wasn’t sure. But when she had been “Killed” he finally realized that he was right. He had been just waiting for her to break down. But what killed him most was that he was the only one who knew that Alex really wasn’t dead. The FBI agents that put her in the Witness Protection Program had sworn him to secrecy. And he hated it. He sat down on the couch and pulled the distraught detective into his arms. She sobbed and with every sob his heart broke. He couldn’t stand to see anyone hurt or in pain especially someone he considered family. That’s why he put so much passion into his work so at the end of the day when he solved a case and put the bad guy in jail he could see the relief on the victims face when they realized they couldn’t be hurt anymore. It made his job worthwhile. It let him sleep easier at night knowing that he made a difference.
“We’re gonna get you some help Liv,” Elliot told his sobbing partner when she had finally calmed down a bit.
He pulled away from her and looked her in the eyes. Tears slid down her tear stained cheeks silently. Her eyes were red and puffy.
“Why don’t you go take a shower and then you’ll come back to my house. You can stay in the guest room,” Elliot told her.
Olivia shook her head frantically and tried to pull out of Elliot’s arms.
“I don’t want to impose on you,” Olivia told him.
“Don’t worry about it,” Elliot assured her.
Olivia still looked at him with uncertainty.
“What about Kathy and the kids?”
Elliot looked her in the eye knowing she would fight this with all she had.
“I’ll talk to Cathy while you’re in the shower. I’m sure she’ll be fine with it. If not I’m sure you can stay with Cap,” Elliot told her, “But I know it won’t be a problem.”
Olivia nodded and allowed Elliot to help her up and push her into the bathroom.

And hour later Elliot sat in his kitchen with his wife Kathy. Olivia was up in the guest bedroom sleeping. Elliot sighed and took another sip of his hot tea.
“She looks horrible,” Kathy said after a moment of silence.
Elliot grimly looked up at his wife from his hot cup of tea.
“Do you know what’s bothering her?” Kathy asked.
Elliot nodded his head grimly.
“Alex,” Elliot said simply.
Silence settled over them again as they each nursed their tea. Then a thought struck Kathy.
“Alex was the ADA that was…”
She couldn’t finish the sentence but she knew her husband would know whom she was talking about. Elliot sighed subtly and stood. He placed his empty mug in the sink and turned to his wife.
“There’s something I need to do. Can you keep an eye on Liv?” Elliot asked his wife.
Kathy nodded. She didn’t understand what exactly he had to do but knew it had something to do with Olivia and possibly Alex.
“Of course El.”
Elliot smiled in thanks and left the house getting into his awaiting car.

Two hours and much arguing later Elliot sat in his car under a bridge in an abandoned parking lot. There was a light tap on his window. He looked up to find the FBI agent in question standing there. He motioned for Agent Hammond to get in the passenger seat. As soon as he was in the car Elliot turned to face him. Anger radiated of him.
“She’s miserable.”
Hammond looked at him with a blank face. Not one emotion was shown in his eyes.
“That’s my problem,” Hammond said simply.
Elliot slammed his hand on the dashboard.
“Yes it is damn it. You’re ruining the life of the best damn detective I know. She’s running herself into the ground,” exclaimed Elliot.
Hammond still showed no emotion. Elliot had to wonder if he had any emotions at all. If he could feel anything.
“It sounds more like her problem,” Hammond said evenly.
If looks could kill Hammond would be a dead man. Elliot was so mad right now that he wasn’t thinking straight.
“I don’t know if to become an FBI agent you have to be a heartless SOB but you’ve ruined enough lives and should just give this to Alex if you have any sympathy at all.”
Elliot shoved the letter he had written while he was stuck in traffic. Hammond nodded and took the letter. He did feel a little remorse over what he had to do. He had to rip the poor girl from her home and take her to some different location and give her a new name and history. It was never easy. But he could never let anyone know how much it really affected him.
“We’ll see,” Was all he said to Elliot’s request.
Elliot’s anger drained from him a little. Mostly because he was exhausted.
“Now get the hell out of my car.”

Olivia sat in one of those uncomfortable chairs in the hospital waiting room. Around her sat Elliot, Fin, Munch, Cragen, and Mrs. Cabot. Olivia couldn’t get the image of Alex lying on the floor out of her head. Her empty eyes staring up at her. It made her sick to her stomach. She didn’t notice that the doctor came in till everyone was standing. She stood as well hoping her rubber legs would hold her up. She looked over at the Doctor and immediately knew something wasn’t right. He had a grim look upon his face.
“We did all we could but we couldn’t save her,” the doctor told her.
Mrs. Cabot collapsed and Elliot was there to catch her and help her sit on the plastic chair. Olivia sank down into the chair in the background. She just couldn’t stand anymore. She was so lost in her own misery she didn’t even notice when she fell. A tear ran down her cheek but she wouldn’t allow herself to cry. No one noticed either. They were all looking at Mrs. Cabot.
Olivia woke up in a cold sweat. She had been having these dreams vividly ever since Alex had been killed except for when she drank herself into oblivion. But tonight Elliot had stopped her and took her back to his house. Olivia snuck out of the guest room and tiptoed silently down the stairs. She just needed one drink to dull the pain she felt inside. To make her forget about the hole in her heart. When she got there she found a lock on the liqueur cabinet. She slid onto the floor and leaned against the cold cabinet. She banged her head on the cabinet. Tears slid down her cheeks slowly.
“Liv?”
Olivia looked up and found the oldest Stabler Maureen standing in the doorway to the kitchen. She quickly wiped her tears away not wanting her to see them.
“Yeah Kiddo,” Olivia replied.
A hint of sorrow showed in her voice even though she tried to hide it.
“You okay?” Maureen asked sliding down on to floor next to Olivia.
“I’m fine,” Olivia lied.
Maureen looked at her and raised an eyebrow.
“Well if ya want to talk. You’ve always been there for me,” Maureen told Olivia.
She had always saw her, as an Aunt and she didn’t like to see any of her family members hurting.
“Thanks.”

The next morning Elliot walked into the precinct and over to Captain Cragen’s office. He knocked on the door and waited for Cragen to say he could come in. He was trying to figure out a way to tell him what was the matter with Olivia without giving too much away. Like the fact that she had been dating Alex. But he didn’t know how to tell Cragen exactly what was going on in her head without saying that little fact.
“Enter.”
Elliot opened the door and stepped in closing the door behind him.
“What can I do for you Elliot?” Cragen asked.
Elliot took a seat in front of Cragen’s desk and settled on telling as much of the truth as he could. He was sure that Cragen would understand.
“It’s about Olivia,” Elliot began.
A worried _expression settled on Cragen’s _expression. Everyone knew that Cragen considered them his family. Even more so to Olivia since she had no family.
“Is she all right?”
Elliot wished he could say yes that she’s just got the flu and needs some time off but knew it wasn’t that simple. Nothing ever was as simple as that no matter how much you wished it was.
“You see. Olivia isn’t going to be coming in today.”
“Is she sick?”
Elliot scratched his head.
“You could say that, but I don’t think it’s physically. It’s more mentally.”
Elliot sighed. What he was about to disclose to Cragen was big information.
“She’s gone back to drinking.”
Cragen sighed heavily and rubbed his eyes with his left hand. He was afraid this was going to happen.
“Do you know why?”
Cragen had a pretty good idea why. He had noticed Olivia’s changed in behavior when Alex had joined the team. He just didn’t know if Elliot knew. But he had a funny feeling that he did. Elliot had been partners with Olivia for a long time and knew her pretty well.
Elliot looked at the floor not wanting to tell Cragen something that Olivia may have not wanted him to know. It wasn’t up to him to tell anyone about her relationship with Alex. That was her job.
“Don’t worry about it. I’ll send George over to her apartment.”
“Well I kinda made her come stay with me for awhile until she’s better.”
“Good thinking Elliot.”
Just then the phone rang. Cragen answered the phone and had a hushed conversation. When he was done he looked over at Elliot.
“Grab Fin and Munch and head over to St. Catherine’s. There’s a girl around sixteen who was stabbed. Ask for Dr. Tanner.”

At the same time, Alex Pantone formerly known as Alexandra Cabot sat in her office at her desk. She was going over tomorrow’s lesson plans. She taught a couple law classes at the local college but it wasn’t the same as actually prosecuting. There was a light knock on the door and before she could call out for them to come in the door opened and in came Agent Sarah McClay. She was new to the FBI and they used her to get information to Alex because she looked like a college student.
“What can I do for you Sarah?” Alex asked.
Sarah handed her a letter and left before Alex could say anything. Alex opened the letter up afraid of what it said. And when she did open it she was mad that she had.
Dear Alex,
It’s been a long time since we’ve last spoken. First off I want to say I understood why you left. I’m the only one who knows your alive and it hurts me to know that. Everyone here misses you. On a lighter note you had a lot of people at your funeral and when you die for real which I hope isn’t any time soon you’ll have an even bigger crowd.
That’s not the reason why I wrote this letter. I’ve just been trying to avoid writing it but I can’t any longer. What I’m about to tell you is going to be hard to read and is even harder to write. For me when I get this on paper it’s going to become real and I don’t think I can take that but I guess we’ll see when it happens. I think you really need to get in touch with Liv. Before you think anything I know about you two and it’s okay. I understand why you wouldn’t want to tell anyone about it but now here’s the problem. Liv is a mess. I went to her apartment tonight and found that she’s started to drink again. I don’t know what I should do about it. I need your help. I have her at my house and Kathy locked the liqueur cabinets but I think she just needs to know you’re alive and well. I don’t know if that will make it worse, but I just feel she should know.
All my love
Elliot
Alex couldn’t believe what she was reading. She should’ve guessed that Olivia would take this hard. She was taking it hard herself. She was so stupid to think that everyone would be okay. The image of a broken Olivia came into her mind. It chilled her to the bone. Goosebumps appeared on her arms. She didn’t know what she was going to do. She was clueless and she was supposed to be the all-knowing Alex Cabot. The best ADA New York had ever seen.
