Thank you!
Hi everyone,
Thank you for thinking of me on my birthday. I’m so blessed to receive such sweet birthday wishes from all over the world. I had the most magical day. Spent the first half in Paris with my one of my best friends Hilary, and the second back in NY celebrating with Peter and August (it doesn’t get much better than that!). Thank you again! You sure do know how to make a girl feel good on her birthday. xo, M

Mariska's Blog was updated 5/16/08. Guest Blogger is Meaghan Morelli, a writer who lives in Connecticut. www.mariska.com/blog/Mariska’s Blog 5/16/08 Guest Blogger: Meaghan Morelli Won’t someone please solve the riddle of Time Travel already? I’d close my eyes, slide back through the years and visit myself as a girl of 14. At the age of 34, I have some wisdom to impart to her—or at least some comfort to offer. My name is Meaghan Morelli. I am a woman, mother, optimist, wife and writer. It took 20 years and the gift of motherhood for me to figure out some things I wish I had discovered long ago. The first message I would share with that 14-year-old girl is: You are strong. Womanhood is a potent gift. We bear the awesome power of creation. Our bodies are vessels for life, our minds conduits of human history and knowledge, our hearts beat with unfathomable and boundless love. Unhindered by fear, we are capable of the most magnificent acts of kindness. We perpetuate. But fear often hinders us. God knows it hindered me—for years. Fear holds us hostage, takes us prisoner, makes us treat others with cruelty. It rots our hearts from the inside and can make us do unspeakable, merciless things to ourselves and to our bodies. We shred ourselves to pieces in fits of self-loathing, in front of mirrors, magazines—or men. That lost 14-year-old girl must know she has value. I would tell her: You are powerful. Your value is not tied to numbers on a scale or labels stitched into seams. Your place in the universe is not dictated by the words of others but by your own actions. I would take that girl by the shoulders, look her in the eye, and tell her: You have so much to give. There will be people in your life able to receive your love—and to return it. Too often, we offer our hearts to those who do not cherish us, and we interpret their indifference—or even hostility—as judgment of our own worth. What a mistake. My little girl, Olivia, mimics me—all day long. This is a stage in her development, certainly. But it is also a strange and amazing mirror that life offers to a mother. The more she mimics, the more I realize the duty I have to fill her up with strength and light and knowledge. Everything I’d like to say to that sad, scared girl that I was I will convey to my daughter. I hope that one day I will be there to see her celebrate her existence. I treasure my relationships with all of the amazing women in my life. They support and nurture with quiet grace and dignity, seamlessly selfless. Even their laughter—especially their laughter—is healing. They are simply glorious, wholehearted, indomitable people. And I am blessed to count Mariska among them, to call her friend. Her wit, her generosity of spirit, her capacity to love and to forgive—these are a few of her very best things. Thank you, Mariska, for the opportunity to share a bit of myself here—and for sharing so much of yourself with me. —Meaghan Morelli is a mother and writer, living in Connecticut. Mariska updated her blog 8/22/08. She is having a very busy summer!
Mariska’s Blog 8/22/08
I’m Back!
I’m back, I’m back! Back from summer vacation, back to work—I can’t believe we’re on to Season 10!!!—and back to blogging! What an absolute whirlwind this summer has been. I thought hiatus was going to be a soft-focus frolic in the ocean every day with August. I thought we’d be napping daily in the shade on a blanket that smelled of the sea and salty air. I thought I’d be lounging the days lazily away. Well, that’s not exactly how it went down.
From the very second we wrapped Season 9, I was on a Joyful Heart Foundation Gala high-speed train. I had never put together a fundraiser before, so I had no idea just how much work went into planning something of this scale! The result, however, was truly beyond my wildest dreams. The evening was inspirational, emotional, magical—and FUN. And we raised more than a million dollars! A million dollars to put towards hope and healing. We truly have a million reasons to be grateful—and very joyful.
Some of my favorite moments from the evening were:
… stepping out of the environmentally fashionable GM Hybrid Tahoe and seeing the hundreds of people there to support and celebrate JHF.
… co-hosting with my dear friend and inspiration, Hilary Swank—who, I might add, shut down production of her film, Amelia, so she could fly to New York to be by my side. Talk about loyalty.
… honoring the talented, brilliant and superhumanly philanthropic Cristina Carlino, founder of philosophy, with our very first Heart of Gold Award.
… getting silly in the giant Mark Van S. digital photo booth.
… singing Bob Marley’s”Three Little Birds” on stage with the mezmerizing Paula Fuga and the Grammy-Award winning Shawn Colvin. I could go on and on about the magic of that night and all of the heroic people who made it possible. It was truly one of the very best nights of my life. Standing there in that room, looking around at all the people who support our cause, who have opened their hearts to help start the healing, was simply awesome. What a bold, fearless, and infinitely joyful way to spend a summer….
Until next time. Xo M
P.S. Be sure to check out Joyful Heart’s new web site (with new logo
and mission) in the next few months. We’re growing by leaps and bounds
and I couldn’t be happier.

Mariska's Blog was updated 9/3/08. Check out the 2 videos created by a fan. They are hilarious. I know the creator of these videos from another board. She is gonna totally flip out if she hasn't already! A special thanks should also go to Mad4svu for forwarding the clips to Mariska's website. She is also a member of the same board as SVUoober. Hopefully she will post here and tell you all about it. HINT! HINT! www.mariska.com/blog/Mariska’s Blog 9/3/08 “Wanna be Mariska Hargitay” OK, so remember when I said so many of you are blessed with creativity and artistry? I wasn’t kidding. There’s a video on YouTube for a song called “Wanna Be Mariska Hargitay,” performed by a girl who posts under the moniker SVUoober. It’s creative, funny and… well, you’ll see. It made me laugh pretty hard, especially the part where she uses her voice like a wah-wah pedal while showing a clip of Meloni dancing on the View like the white man he is. That’s some funny stuff. Watch both versions below Thanks for the attention, SVUoober girl. And Mariska Hargitay to you. posted by mariska 5:34 pm

Mariska's Blog was updated 9/10/08. She voices her views on Barack Obama. Mariska’s Blog 9/10/08 The Power of Possibility “We meet at one of those defining moments…”- Barack Obama Watching Barack Obama deliver his acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination for the presidency was one of the most exhilarating political moments I have ever witnessed. More powerful because it transcended politics and reached into the realm of possibility and reintroduced our country—and our hearts—to the landscape of hope, somewhere we haven’t been for a while. I’m not necessarily a political person. I don’t follow every bill that goes through Congress. And I certainly don’t make a habit of telling people how to vote. But I was so moved by his speech and am so inspired by his candidacy that, well, I feel like I need to shout about it a little bit. What a thrill it has been to see so many walls broken down and taboos shattered for women, for African-Americans, for all of us. We’re living history as it unfolds and it is truly breathtaking. Barack Obama is an unlikely candidate, just as he said. Raised by a single mother in a working class family, he had to work hard—and against all the odds—to arrive where he is. His life, his hardships and his ultimate success, has so much to teach us: that it is up to each of us to choose our destiny, that our lives are products of our purpose, that we—not our circumstances—determine our fate. He has infused so many people with renewed hope, pushing against the fear that has frustrated this country for too long. And not just because he’s an immensely talented speaker; but because his words are born out of his own experience. He encountered injustice and battled it with decency. He heard the word “no” and shouted back “yes!” His words and actions are resuscitating our choking nation. He is right: we find ourselves at a defining moment in our country’s history. We have the light of hope shining on us again and we are turning our collective face to feel its warmth. Never have I been so excited to cast my vote. Never have I been so hopeful for what is just around the corner. Never have I believed more strongly that anything is possible. For more information on voting and how to register, visit: www.rockthevote.com/To read about Barack Obama go to www.barackobama.com/Don’t forget to make history and vote on Tuesday November 4th! posted by mariska 1:47pm

Mariska's Blog was updated 9/24/08. www.mariska.com/blog/ Mariska’s Blog 9/24/08 With Much Gratitude First of all, I have, hands down, the best fans in all of show business. I cannot thank you enough for the awesome, thoughtful, creative, sincere, heartwarming, uplifting messages you sent me–you made me even more excited than I already was. I am still flying high from having been nominated in this incredible year. Glenn Close is one of the reasons I became an actress, and to watch one of my mentors be honored the way she was on Sunday was awesome. As she said in her great speech, now is such an exciting time to be an actress, and for her to include Sally, Holly, Kyra and me in her “sisterhood”—it doesn’t get much better than that. We are all incredibly proud of “Undercover,” the Emmy-nominated episode. A lot of people worked very hard to put that dark and difficult show together. I still get questions about it: Did you film in a real prison? Were you nervous? Was it a difficult episode for you personally? Yes, we did shoot it in a real prison, which made the work that much more intense for all of us. Our show is never easy, but this particular episode was as grueling, as challenging and required as much soul-searching as any I’ve ever worked on. The intro to SVU always ends with the words, “These are their stories.” I certainly took a breath when I got the script and realized that a rape was going to be part of Olivia’s story. I never let myself forget that these stories are real stories that happened to real women, stories of pain and trauma that tore apart hearts and lives. I never forget that these stories happen every day, to 1 in 6 women. But I am so grateful for the challenge of living out one of Olivia’s darkest chapters. And I am grateful for the chance to show the true face of sexual violence– the ugliness, the inhumanity and the terror–and to shine the light of truth on it. The show certainly demanded our best from all of us, but the artistic rewards and recognition were gratifying. The letters we received from survivors–at once full of personal pain and praise for our work– were among the most beautiful and humbling that I have ever received. Everyone has lots of questions about the new season, and rest assured, most of them are going to get answered. In the meantime, have a look at our truly remarkable roster of upcoming guest stars: James Brolin, Chris Elliot, and the unbelievable Ellen Burstyn. I cannot begin to tell you how honored I was to work with her and learn from her. It’s not every day that you get the chance to meet someone you admire so much, much less watch them unpack their artistry before your eyes. Speaking of meeting people, last night you were introduced to our new A.D.A., Kim Greylek, brought to life by the very talented Michaela McManus. We’re all thrilled to have her on the show, and we can’t wait to start busting perps with her! Thanks again for all the good wishes! Keep watching! God Bless, M posted by mariska 2:18pm

Mariska has a new blog. www.mariska.com/blog/Mariska’s Blog 10/3/08 Pink is the new black According to the American Cancer Society, 2.4 million women in the United States have been diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many of you know how dear this cause is to me. I have watched friends lose their hair, their breasts, and yes, even their lives to this silent killer. So to all of you—sisters, mothers, friends, daughters, aunts, grandmothers—I want to say: the disease is silent, but we don’t have to be. With every passing year, we spread the word, woman to woman. We educate one another about the importance of self-exams and regular mammograms. We donate our hair to women who have lost theirs. We raise money, awareness and the spirits of those who need it most. And every year, through our energy and commitment, we get closer to finding a cure. Get out there this October and get involved. Walk a 5k! Make a donation of your time, your money, or your beautiful hair. Shop at stores that donate revenue to finding a cure. Wear a pink ribbon and your favorite pair of jeans as an act of solidarity—today was Lee’s National Denim Day!—in the battle against breast cancer. Take a stand. Make a difference together. Arm in arm, with bold voices, make yourselves heard in the fight for a cure. Susan G.
