Thanks for posting the guest blogger, Rambabe. I am glad that Mariska is involved in this also. Teen dating abuse is a huge issue that in my day was never discussed even though I knew personally of a few episodes. We have come along way.

New Blog 3/18/09
Mariska’s Blog 3/18/09
A Great Way to Give
My schedule can get pretty packed, to say the least. Between motherhood, work, friends, travel and my foundation, it sometimes feels like a small miracle that I’m actually where I’m supposed to be when I’m supposed to be there. Having so much on my plate means that I need to stay organized and in touch, and I’d be lying if I didn’t say that my iPhone is the tool that helps me do those things. It really kind of rocks.
I’ve been a loyal iPhone user since the day they came out. I use it a million times a day, to track my schedule, to take photos of my boy, to talk to my family and my friends, and to keep up on emails—including the wonderful words of inspiration I get from all of you. (It’s true! I really do make time to read all your emails, and this little piece of technology helps me do it.) I love this phone so much that I made sure everyone I work with has one, too.
But I’m not telling you about the iPhone because it keeps my schedule straight and accessible, or because it takes great photos. I’m telling you about the iPhone because now you can use yours—or any AT&T mobile phone—to support the Joyful Heart Foundation!
Truist has unveiled a new mobile platform—CharityCall—that allows anyone on the AT&T Wireless network to instantly donate $25 to the charity of their choice—including the Joyful Heart Foundation. It’s safe and easy and takes less than a minute. The $25 goes straight onto your wireless bill, so you don’t even need to enter any financial information.
Here’s how it works:
Dial # 505 from your wireless phone
Wait for the prompt and push 1 to make a one-time donation
Then all you need to do is enter our two digit code, 44, to support Joyful Heart
You’ll get a text message acknowledging your contribution and a link for more info about CharityCall, the organizations involved, and access to an online receipt for your gift. Seriously, how easy is that?
You’ll also receive deep gratitude on my part, for the hearts your donation will help Joyful Heart open. We just couldn’t do what we do without you.
So next time you make a call, remember that you can make a difference, too. And while your at it, text a friend about CharityCall.
Many, many thanks.
xo,
M

3/22/09 Guest Blogger: Andrea Buchanan To the most amazing fans in the world……A big heartfelt Hello!!!! My name is Andrea Buchanan and I have been asked to blog by my dear, beautiful friend, Mariska. Before I go down this path, let me just say thank you to Mariska for allowing me to share a little bit of me with you. It’s not everyday that someone can reach so many in the blogosphere, so I am grateful for the opportunity and I hope that you walk away from these few words inspired!!! You may not know this, but Mariska contributed an amazingly personal story to a book that I just wrote, edited and published (Simon and Schuster) entitled NOTE TO SELF: 30 Women on Humiliation, Heartbreak, Hardship and Overcoming it all. It’s a book that I’ve been preparing for my whole life and it only took two years of that life to see it come to fruition. I consider myself lucky. The stories are all about triumph over adversity. That moment when you meet yourself in a real way. When you lose a loved one, a job, your pride, when you feel ashamed, at a total loss, like it’s never going to get better. When things are so dark that there is no light at the end of that tunnel. Well, I believe and I know it to be true, that we are capable of reclaiming our lives even after the worst of circumstances. It may not be easy. You will have to work at it. There won’t be any shortcuts. You have to go through it. You can’t go over or under it. But it can happen. You can walk away from some horrible moment, time, experience, a different and possibly better you. With a lesson firmly intact and inspiration to guide you through the rest of your life. I titled the book NOTE TO SELF because at the end of each essay written by amazing women such as Sheryl Crow, Camryn Manheim, Kathy Najimy, Jenny Bicks and so on….along with women you’ve never heard of, but man are they incredible, women such as, Maile Zambuto, Beverly London, Rita Hunt, there is a Note. A quote. A message. A sentence. A word. We all have a “story”, that helps to define us, a piece of ourselves that reflects who we are today, yet is somehow rooted in our past, perhaps holding us back. More often than not, we need to shed that outdated outer shell - that “story” - so that we may finally and fully move into the next phase of life – with a lesson of wisdom, firmly intact and if you are like me (taped to a wall). So I asked my fellow contributors to not only share their stories, but to sum it up in a final note-to-self, something that a reader could scrawl on a post-it and keep somewhere they could access for a quick dose of wisdom. Each of the stories were primarily about moments of redemption after one of what I call life’s “Big Three”: Humiliation, Heartbreak and Hardship.Oh yes, I have notes of inspiration all over my house. Above my sink. In my office. In my car. I write in my introduction “they are like oxygen, I need them to breathe.” They have helped me see the light when I had blinders on. It seems so simple, really. But they are, without a doubt, what gets me through some pretty tough stuff. Here’s my challenge for you. I understand that the famous quotes of our lives are there for a reason and I love them. Where would be were it not for ‘BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD” or THE ONLY FEAR WE HAVE TO FEAR, IS FEAR ITSELF and the hundreds that each one of you are thinking about right now. I offered an opportunity for my contributors to come up with their own inspiration. Their own quotes. Their NOTE TO SELF. Because I believe that we are our own source of light and security. So I would challenge you, if you’ve gotten this far in this blog, to create your own NOTE TO SELF based on your own story of triumph over adversity. Grace over grit. Laughter over shame. Write it down right now. Make it up to fit who you are. It doesn’t have to be perfect or even grammatically correct. It just has to sing to you. And put it somewhere in your life that you will see it so that you are reminded of just how amazing you are with all of your perfect imperfections. Write yourself a love note. And now back to Mariska. I am so grateful to be able to call her a dear friend. I met her through other gal pals, like you do, and we connected immediately. There aren’t enough keys on this computer or hours left on this flight to tell you the long long story. But suffice it to say, I told her emphatically she had to swim with wild dolphins in Hawaii. She looked at me with abject fear in her eyes and said, “Okay. I will do it.” well, if you know Mariska, you know the rest of that story. Joyful Heart was born. I sit on the board of Joyful Heart and have since its inception. To watch Mariska create this foundation is like watching a painter who had never picked up a brush but knew she could paint. She has been led by pure inspiration and grace and most importantly INTUITION/INSTINCT. It has been a blessing for me. And the full circle of it all, eight years later, is that I get to publish a book with her story and the early stages of the story of Joyful Heart in it. How cool is that? She has the honored position of closing the book. The last of the 30 women. Because her story is in all of us. And it is the story of this life…..Give Back. No matter what. Give. It is what can heal you. It is where true healing happens. Please take a moment to visit my website www.notetoselfbook.com to meet the other incredible women who are featured in this book. And one more thing. Be inspired to tell your own story. Okay and another. Expect a miracle. Love and everything like it, Andrea Buchanan Click here to purchase Note to Self posted by Mariska.com 10:37pm

3/31/09 Law & Order: SVU Takes On the Issue of Child Soldiers and Sex Slaves in Africa Co-authored by John Prendergast, Co-founder, The Enough Project It’s midnight. We are in a studio in North Bergen, New Jersey, filming take after take of a scene for an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. We’re tired. It’s the fourteenth hour of what will be a sixteen-hour day. We’re tired, but we’re ambitious. When the episode airs TONIGHT at 10PM on NBC, we need it to reach not only into households across this country, but all the way into the dense forests of one of the most troubled places on earth. The episode is called “Hell,” and it is based on the experiences of child soldiers and sexual slaves in Central Africa. The history of the region is harrowing. For over two decades, the Lord’s Resistance Army, or LRA, has brought untold suffering to the people of central Africa–for many years in northern Uganda and southern Sudan, more recently in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This small but ruthless militia specializes in abducting children and enlisting them to serve as soldiers and sex slaves. Boys are brainwashed and given guns; sometimes they’re forced to kill their own family members. Girls serve as “wives” for the militia commanders, often bearing their children. Over the last decade, nearly two million people in northern Uganda have been forced from their homes and into refugee camps. At the height of the conflict, the camps’ squalid conditions were claiming nearly 1,000 lives per day. The children–tens of thousands of them - who would walk for miles every night to seek shelter and safety from the LRA -coined a term for their endless journeys: “night commuting”. The LRA has since moved out of northern Uganda, and peace is slowly returning to the region. But the LRA’s atrocities are now underway in neighboring Congo and southern Sudan. Their latest spree of brutality has already killed more than 1,000 people. The Lord’s Resistance Army would not exist without Joseph Kony, its messianic, megalomaniacal leader. For years, Kony has promised to emerge from the bush and engage in peace talks. Time and again, he has proven that he is not serious about peace, and that he will resist any attempts to negotiate an end to his reign of terror. Last December, with U.S. backing, the armies of Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and southern Sudan launched a joint military operation against the LRA to apprehend Joseph Kony and his key commanders and thus end the conflict. Thus far, the mission has failed. As the LRA moves to evade capture, they are looting, pillaging and killing, targeting innocent and unprotected civilians in their path. But the situation is not hopeless. A solution is actually possible. Thus far, this immense suffering has occurred largely off the radar of the Western capitals. If the suffering is to end, that radar must begin to register this crisis. If the show on Tuesday night moves you–or if this information has moved you–take a minute to write to your Senators and to President Obama and urge him to make this crisis a priority. Swift and decisive action by the administration to protect civilians from further violence can be part of a broader strategy to end the conflict. As a start, ask the president to name a Special Envoy for Central Africa to deal with the LRA and with the ongoing war in the Congo. Learn more at www.enoughproject.org. Can a TV show raise awareness, educate millions of Americans, and inspire them to demand government action that will bring an end to the scourge of child soldiers and sex slaves half a world away? It’s midnight, we’re filming–and we are ambitious. Join us in our ambition. posted by mariska 3:51pm oowsvu, we already have a thread for this here: specialvictims.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=news&action=display&thread=2620&page=1 Thanks, finaddict

Mariska's Blog was updated 4/8/09 Guest Blogger is Nate Richards, Director Of Marketing & Communications at JHF www.mariska.com/blog/4/8/09 Guest Blogger: Nate Richards Joyful greetings, Mariska.com readers! My name is Nate Richards and I have the pleasure of serving as Director of Marketing & Communications at the Joyful Heart Foundation. As you probably know, Mariska founded Joyful Heart five years ago, and today our mission is to heal, educate and empower survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse, and to shed light into the darkness that surrounds these issues. Fantastically inspirational figure that Mariska is, she asked me to use her blog to keep you in the loop about what we’re doing at Joyful Heart. We’re all hoping you’ll lend your endless enthusiasm to our latest endeavors. First of all, we’ve been working hard to boost Joyful Heart’s online presence. We know the web is the most effective way to reach out to people like you. If you haven’t already, you can visit us at www.joyfulheartfoundation.org. While we’re very proud of our website and its power to communicate information, we’re interested in building a true community and fostering an open dialogue about these issues. To do that, we needed a place where our community could gather online. That’s why we’ve launched our official Facebook page. We’re hoping you will join us in this next important step on our journey toward ending the cycle of violence and abuse. Consider this an official invitation. Find our Facebook home right here. On the page you can keep up to date on our latest programs and partnerships, find links to other things we love (like philosophy, Me&Ro, and the fabulous Hawaiian musician Paula Fuga). You can also connect to some of the virtual events we’ll be co-hosting, like today’s “share the light” event, sponsored by philosophy. Here’s the info: Philosophy is encouraging all of their fans to support Sexual Assault Awareness Day of Action – April 8, 2009 – by shedding light into the darkness that surrounds the issue of sexual violence. How? By lighting a virtual candle on their Facebook page. For every candle “lit” on philosophy’s page on April 8th, they will donate an “amazing grace” shower gel to JHF to be given to a woman in need. Maybe it will go to a mom living in a domestic violence shelter, or a woman leaving a rape crisis program, or one of joyful heart’s retreat participants. Wherever that little bottle of “amazing grace” is headed, it will be a token that represents the hope we have for that survivor’s journey. And every virtual candle “lit” by a supporter will spread awareness among that supporter’s circle. That’s the power of an online community. To light a virtual candle, comment on philosophy’s Facebook note on Wednesday, April 8 with a message of hope, healing and light. You can RSVP for the event by clicking here. I sincerely hope you’ll join our virtual event on April 8th, and that you’ll join our community of supporters on Facebook. We’re really looking forward to having you share your thoughts, hopes, and words of empowerment with one another—and we hope you’ll encourage your friends and family to join us as well. Looking forward to seeing you online! ~Nate posted by Mariska.com 8:33am

I also read somewhere that he is going to teach Mariska how to "twitter." lol If he can teach her to rap I'm sure he can teach her to twitter. ;D

New Blog entry 5/29/09
Mariska's goddaughter wrote a poem about her.
Mariska’s Blog 5/29/09
Maria’s Poem
There have been a lot of words published about me over the years: about the work I do, the clothes I wear, the things I eat, the kind of lip gloss I prefer. Many people have had much to say about me. But no one’s words have moved me quite so much as Maria’s. This writer is smart, sweet and has talent to spare. Who is she? The next big thing at Vanity Fair? The New York Times? Well, maybe. She’s also my strong and beautiful goddaughter. And she wrote a poem for me that I would like to share with you.
My Shinning Star! Mariska is the one to be She’s the coolest star to see. She’s my Godmother without a doubt We don’t see each other day in and day out.
Mariska we know your busy with Law and Order Thats why our stays are always shorter. Your Grammy is the proof of this So, all your fans just want a kiss.
Mariska is the best She never is unblessed She makes me laugh when I am sad She never makes me really mad. Mariska is my shinning star
Even though we are very far. We haven’t seen each other in a billion years Sometimes I even shed some tears.
Mariska, I know I’ll see you soon Maybe before the flowers bloom. I know you’re just a call away to my house I know you’ll stay!
