It sucks but I think he'll be okay. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do with your life and career... ...well as long as Elliot rides off into the sunset with Kathy (or dies) then I'll be happy. Well I won't be happy if he dies but as long as he doesn't hook up with Olivia then I'll be happy.

Eh…doesn’t surprise me. His character has had some serious issues in the past and has gone through a lot in his marriage, so maybe it’s time for him to step back and do something else with his life. Mariska’s character on the other hand has a lot that hasn’t been really explored (my opinion). Most of the show was focused on Stabler and how the job effects his personal life so it’s time for a change. I don't want them to kill off his character at all - I would weep if they did. And besides that would be a terrible way to end. I would much rather have that big goodbye and maybe a hope for him to do guest spots.
Good luck to him and may SVU live forever!

I want him to retire and just be a Dad and husband.

Well folks you might know by now but that article was most likely a FAKE! The article has been taken down and Neal Baer stated on twitter that Chris is NOT leaving.

The article was taken down, but then reposted, which I find very confusing. In the meantime, other magazines have taken up the story - but presumably based it on that article. My guess would be that Neal Bear isn't going to let him off, easily. Law and Order is still a successful show, and this would jeapordize it because it could cause a drop in viewers. Fewer viewers = less money. However, I'm sure that IF Chris Meloni has expressed an intention to leave, he is going to find a way out. Which seems reasonable after 12 years, although this is still one of the best-paid jobs around. Personally, I just hope he doesn't leave yet! But then, if it were for me, SVU could go on with the current cast forever. The stories never get old. I, personally, just can't picture SVU without Elliot. If he were to leave, I hope they give him a dignified, happy ending. He should retire from SVU and spend time with his family. With a nice goodbye from SVU, a graceful, moving but not too sad goodbye. Of course, I think that if they make him leave, they'll kill him off and make the most of it by making it a very dramatic episode, which I would NOT like given the background story with Elliot's family. It's just too cruel. I also don't know how Olivia would deal with that. I think realistically, her character wouldn't stick around in that scenario. Anyway, I'm just hoping he's not leaving just yet.

ITA about that article being re-posted. Not only is it confusing, it's also annoying. There are numerous articles either saying he is leaving or staying and I think it's best if we just wait until we here it from the horses mouth.

I agree, until Baer/Wolf announce it I am not reading anything else about it. Makes me nervous.

How confusing! Personally, I hope he doesn't leave, it's always tricky when one of the main cast leave. But CSI has carried on with Grissom, so I think SVU could carry on. How well, we'd have to see. Although, if Elliot did retire (he's not allowed to die!) then hopefully they wouldn't get a new character in, at least not yet. Give the other characters who have slipped into minor players have a chance to breath.
You'd think someone from the show would clear it up though, no? Suppose it's a good way to keep people watching the show though.

I just googled 'Mariska Hargitay' and 3 news articles came up. One article did state that after the two year contract is up, that's when Chris will be leaving. Others make it sound like it will happen sooner.
I don't know. Just wait and see.

Hi contract is up at the end of Season 12 which will be in May 2011. I am sure a more "official" annoucement will be made either at the beginning of Season 12 or closer to the end when his last episode will air. Either way there is nothing to worry about now...just enjoy the show!
