Three-legged snowshoe race kicking off U of M's Festival of Life and Learning Mon Jan 21 08:52:59 CST 2008
The University of Manitoba's annual Celebration Week kicks off today with a three-legged snowshoe race.
The annual event, known as A Festival of Life and Learning, will showcase speakers, a snow boarding competition and campus life.
"A Festival of Life and Learning is an event not only for the University of Manitoba, but for the entire Winnipeg community," Garry Sran, UMSU president said in a statement. "It is an opportunity for us to come together and see some local talent, as well as listen to some very interesting speakers."
Renowned naturalist, adventurer and director of the Columbus Zoo, Jack Hanna, who also has a hit television show, will speak at the university this week. Others include actor and social commentator Ice-T as well as Joel Cohen, write and associate producer of The Simpsons.
I like how they called Ice-T a social commentator. Let's hope this University knows that some of Ice's commentary can be considered vulgar to some.

Ice-T shoots from the lipRapper shares philosophy with university crowd By ROB NAY, SUN MEDIA
Law & Order: SVU star Ice-T speaks at the University of Manitoba. (JASON HALSTEAD, Sun Media) He's gone from being a gangster to playing a cop on television.
Yesterday afternoon, rapper, actor and author Ice-T shared his story with a crowd of more than 300 at the University of Manitoba as part of its Celebration Week activities.
"I did everything I could to kill myself," he said, explaining his early gang and criminal involvement.
"Somehow or other, I made it out."
He peppered his discussion with jokes, taking shots at Kanye West for carrying "a teddy bear on stage" and also poking fun at himself, the man otherwise known as Tracy Morrow.
The talk moved to serious subjects as he spoke about losing his parents and being sent as a child to live with an alcoholic aunt in Los Angeles, where he became involved in the Crips gang.
Faced later with becoming a teenage father, he decided to make a change.
"It dawned on me -- you can't keep being on the streets," he told the crowd, explaining his decision to join, and spend four years, in the army.
"I don't advise it. There are other jobs where you don't get shot at," he said, drawing laughter.
Credited with being an early originator of Los Angeles hip hop in the 1980s, Ice-T added acting to his resume in the early 1990s.
Alongside film roles, he crossed over to television with his current role as Detective Fin Tutuola on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
'THE ONLY ROUTE'
Ice-T, wearing a Barack Obama pin on his jacket, spoke on a variety of topics, from American politics and hip hop to religion, education and racism.
"Humble yourself," Ice-T said, explaining individuals shouldn't view themselves as superior to others.
"Education may seem like the square route but it's the only route to get to the head of this game," he said, advising people to pursue their degrees.
"Just to have it says something about your character," he said.
The crowd was impressed.
"I thought it was fantastic -- super engaging and tonnes of humour," said Jonny Sopotiuk, 20, a member of the University of Manitoba Students' Union council.
"I was impressed he didn't hold back," said Quincy Adurogboye, 28, a film studies student who has been a fan of Ice-T's since he was a teenager.
