Law & Order's Strange Scienceby Ingela Ratledge November 30, 2009 10:28 AM EST Did it seem like there was no way that Law & Order: SVU’s episode about DNA fabrication could be based on fact?Holy double helix! In a recent episode, Det. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) was framed for a crime she didn’t commit when a baddie manufactured her blood DNA and planted it on a murder weapon. Surely that couldn’t actually happen, right? Wrong! The story was based on legit science published by Israeli-based lead author Dan Frumkin in the journal Forensic Science International: Genetics. “I was surprised and excited to see it on the show!” says Frumkin, who points out that fabricating the genetic code can be mastered by “anyone who’s taken a first-year undergrad biology course.” SVU’s exec producer, Neal Baer, confirms that the program is constantly on the prowl for inspiration that can be found in the headlines and beyond. “We have a researcher who pulls research on every topic imaginable. I read this and said, ‘That’s an episode!’” he says. “It’s very important to us that we present accurate information, because—like it or not—we know that people get health and science info from TV.” www.tvguidemagazine.com/is-it-just-me/law-orders-strange-science-3373.html

Truth is stranger than fiction and this is not only strange but extremely scary.

This is very scary. I haven't seen the SVU episode yet, so not knowing how they figured out the DNA was fabricated, this could potentially cause tons of problems using DNA as evidence at trial.
