After a run of so-so episodes, we finally got a great one! Martin Short was fabulous. I usually dislike the stunt casting, but he was so good that I was able to forget he was Martin Short. Man, was he sick!
He really creeped me out at the end when he did the voice to Stabler. He kept wanting to blame his wife because he realized that she had lied to him about being a virgin, but wouldn't this have been problematic anyway? I mean, once he slept with her she would no longer be a virgin anyway (had she been telling the truth). Wouldn't he then return to his obsessive behavior and take more girls? The wife has her own issues and is certainly no saint, but I think his behavior can be taken off of her shoulders. They were both so sick!
Loved the scene where Olivia tried to trick Valentine. She thought she had him until he informed her that she doesn't have a husband. The look on her face was priceless.
Sorry Casey fans, but are they reverting back to old annoying Casey? Her appearance in this ep served no purpose, and she was rude and annoying to Olivia. I know she was just doing her job, but it seemed out of character for her. Lately she's been fine and not annoying at all. I'm not a Casey-hater, so I hope they don't turn her into a dislikable character.
Anyway, this was a very strong episode!

I loved the look on Fin's face when Casey told him to fix the door in front of Cragen. ;D

(Newbie. Hi.)
(Spoilers below.)
One huge relief to me was that the writers stuck to the relentless skepticism that has characterized this show from its first mention of "psychics". Over the course of the entire series, every time they've mentioned a "psychic", it's been only to have someone make a snarky comment (like a caller to the "tip line" in one ep who didn't know where the missing person was, but could provide an exact date for when Long Island would sink into the Atlantic Ocean).
It would have been so easy, in writing an episode that actually focused on a supposed "psychic", to play the well-you-know game: "Well, you know, he might really know things!" "Well, you know, there are people out there who really doooo have spayshulmagicalmystical Powerrrz!" This is the cop-out they used in the early seasons of the old show MacGyver: have some mysterious Phenomenon take place, have the hero express his skepticism, have the hero debunk it and demonstrate exactly how it was faked ... but then at the end undercut the rationality with, ooOOOoo, he found the speakers that were producing the fake Bigfoot howl, but we just heard a Bigfoot howl! Or, ooOOOoo, he proved the "haunting" was a fake, but we still see the curtains blowing on a windless day!
As I say, it's the the writers' credit that they did not resort to this cop-out. The characters don't believe in "psychics", and the show stuck to that -- and was at some pains to demonstrate exactly how such "psychics" operate. And just when I was afraid we'd go into ooOOOoo, how did he know Kathy Stabler had only been pregnant three times? Or, ooOOOoo, how did he know Benson isn't married?, they demonstrated exactly how he did know -- and that it was always by perfectly ordinary, rational, mundane, non-magical methods. Nor did they have to play, "Oh, he's an awful terrible person, but oh look over here, we'll show this NICE 'psychic' who's sweet and loving and surrounds people with White Light and really does have spayshulmagicalmystical Powerrrz!" It was faked, and they pointed out that it was faked and didn't have to do a nonsensical "equal time" thing.

Very well thought out CactusWren (Welcome!)
I agree, i liked how instead of going "wow, how in the world did he do that?" they instead showed how and why he was doing it. With the previews, i thought it was going to be something tipical, with the squad not believing him and then the psychic giving them an incredible lead that solved the case. Well, silly me for thinking that SVU would take the easy way out.
First, Martin Short's performance was great. I dont know if anyone else noticed, or my eyes were playing tricks on me, but the way light was used to make him look that much scarier... his face at one point, the way the light hit it and created shadows, reminded me of the villian from an old Disney movie. You know, incredibly silly looking but at the same time, its just bugging you how freaky he looks. ;D
I only agree with you on half, TV. I do agree that her appearance in the episode served no real purpose, and that the writers have been writing her out of character lately. If they keep going like this, they are going to get to the point that all the work they did trying to incorperate her into the squad will have been for nothing. Heck, even Casey lovers like me arent as estatic about the positions she has been put in lately.
However, i dont agree that Casey was rude to Olivia. (and in trying to explain why i think so, it may sound like i am quoting Casey, i think she hit the nail on the head) Olivia was asking for something almost impossible, and i think she knew it. No judge in their right mind would issue a warrant without probable cause. And, it wasnt Casey that completely violated Sebastian's constitutional rights by breaking down his door, it was Elliot. Casey shouldnt have to fix the squad's messes. She has done so in "Coerced" (for Elliot again) and then laterin "Poison" she bailed Elliot out of jail. (is it just me, or is there a pattern here?) its not her job to fix the squad's mistakes, but she has anyways. Thats more than she needed to do. Theres only so far that she can stretch. And, at the end of their conversation, Olivia didnt have to rub it in Casey's face by asking if it was ok if they arrested Sebastian.
On a side note, what do you all think about Casey calling Olivia "Liv"? think it is a sign that Casey is indeed getting closer to the squad and they are more able to work as a team. It could also be a sign of Casey and Olivia developing a friendship, which would also be nice, the only two women on the squad.
And, you had to laugh, at least a little, when Casey delivered the search warrant to Fin, saying "I fixed this, you fix the door." And Cragen, very confused, wondering "What door?" Classic SVU comic relief ;D

Eh, I can see both sides of the issue here. I get that the detectives were in a time crunch and it had become personal what with the disappearance of Sister Peg. But at the time when Elliot crashed the apartment, they had no physical evidence that tied Sebastian to the crimes. They had a healthy hunch, but a healthy hunch does not probable cause make. Both women were frustrated, Olivia with a friend being missing and no legal way to go about finding her, and Casey with the detectives getting ahead of themselves and expecting her to magically fix it for them. The frustration came out as both of them yelling at each other. It surprised me, and I almost didn't catch it at first, even though I tend to watch shows with the closed captioning on (I'm weird). I did like it, though. I do think it's a sign that she's getting closer, at least to Olivia. On plot note, though, I think I've been watching way too much Medium, because up until Sister Peg disappeared, even with the explanations of cold readings and whatnot, I was all, "How does he KNOW that?!" (I'm also very gullible )

Classic SVU comic relief ;DHi TruBlu! I kinda agree with you a/b Casey and Liv in this ep. I think they were both under pressure, and they snapped. There was a lot of give and take. Like, when Casey said to Liv "What? Are you psychic too, now?" and then Liv gave her a parting shot "We're gonna question him. Is that OKmwith you?" But, in the end, Casey came through with the warrant. I see that more of like a family thing, where two members yell at each other, but still love each other at the end of the day. And, I picked up on Casey calling Liv "Liv" at the end. If anything, that only reinforces the point; she really likes Liv as a friend, which is why she feels comfy arguing so emphatically with her. Plus, there is this link; editorial.acionline.biz/search.pp?flush=1to a Spanish photo site. Just type "Diane Neal" in the search field, and you will get a couple of photos of Diane and Mariska sharing this beautiful laugh together. Maybe one day the writers will pick up on their unquestionable chemistry, and we'll see an expansion of that brief exchange of smiles at the end of "Weak." ;D

I loved that part TruBlu!! I was cracking up. Regarding my earlier comment, I hope it didn't come across like I was bashing Casey or being unfair. I like how the writers have developed the character since she joined the show. She went from being a character that I disliked to a character that I now like because they made her less harsh and more a part of the team. I just thought that the scene seemed to revert back, but I agree with everyone who has said that both characters were frustrated and not on their best behavour! ;D It was more of an observation than a complaint. Anyway, just wanted to clarify my earlier statement.
