Benson’s Discovery
Chapter one
Detective Olivia Benson awoke with a start. Her cell phone was vibrating steadily at her bedside table. Sighing, she picked up the slowly pulsating phone.
“Benson.”
Olivia sat up and stifled a yawn.
“Olivia, this is Cragen. Are you awake?”
She groaned.
“Yes, what do you need?”
“Get down here right away. I cannot discuss it on the phone. Just hurry, Olivia.”
When she heard what her captain was saying to her, she was instantly awake, already headed toward her closet. Pulling out her jacket, she slipped on a pair of sneakers. She hurried out the door.
“Thanks for calling me. I’m on my way” she said.
She quickly climbed into her car and made her way to the station. She was in total shock, unable to comprehend what Cragen had said. She started the ignition. Rubbing her temples, she took off at seventy miles per hour, speeding toward the station in disbelief. When she arrived, the main room was bustling, much to her surprise. She spotted Elliot Stabler, her partner.
“Hey, what is going on?”
Elliot sighed, and gestured to Cragen’s office.
“You better go talk to him.”
Olivia raised an eyebrow at Elliot. She made her way toward Cragen’s office. He opened the door and closed the blinds. Olivia shut the door behind herself.
“Olivia, you better sit down.”
Olivia obliged, with a confused look on her face. Cragen spoke again.
“Olivia, I don’t know how to say this. Your mother was….she was raped. I’m so sorry.”
Olivia froze, stunned. She stared at Cragen with a look of disbelief. She could hardly believe it. When she spoke, her voice was quiet and raspy.
“Is she alright? Captain, please tell me where she is.” Olivia stared intently at him, waiting for an answer.
“Olivia, she didn’t make it. Her rapist killed her.”
Olivia’s eyes widened. She lost all thought, all sense. She felt like she was dreaming. She felt the hot tears drenching her face. She welcomed them. Olivia could not hold in the pain any longer. She rose from her seat, almost in a trance. She heard Cragen calling to her, but she ignored him. She stumbled over to Elliot. He gave her a look of deep sympathy and sorrow. She collapsed into his arms. He held her. She leaned away from him and wiped the tears from her face with a soft Kleenex. She turned to Cragen.
“Olivia, I am sure you want some time off. Go home, get some rest.” Cragen said softly.
She shook her head. All the pain and sorrow was turning into anger.
“No way, Captain. Tell me where the crime scene is. Where did it happen?”
“No, Olivia. I cannot let you work in this condition.”
“I am going there, whether I am on duty or on my own time. I am going to solve this case.”
Cragen sighed. He motioned to Elliot. He nodded. They left the station and walked down to the garage. They climbed into their standard issue Chevrolet, with Elliot at the wheel. He started to drive. They sat in silence for a long time. Olivia stared out the window, gazing at the scenery like a child. The silence was finally broken when Olivia spoke.
“Where are we headed?”
Elliot didn’t look up. He kept driving.
“Central Park.”
Olivia stared dead ahead as they approached the north end of the park. Elliot stopped the car as he pulled it alongside the strip of policeman’s tape. As they simultaneously climbed out of the car, several policemen walked by them, and gestured toward a dark corner of the park. They spotted Dr. Warner leaned over a body. Olivia shuddered as Warner rose from the ground. She walked over to the pair of detectives.
“Seems to be death by strangulation, but there are several cuts on the wrists and arms. Only a few fluids, but enough for the rape kit to pull something out. She must have been attacked from behind, because there are no signs of struggle.”
“Isn’t that a possibility that he knew her? How do you know it happened here?” said Elliot.
“There was a black ski mask over in the bushes, and this man is foreign. No way they knew each other.”
Olivia was the next to speak. “Where is he from? Do you have an I.D?”
“No, but the mask has a symbol embroidered onto the back. It belongs to a religious cult in Africa.”
Olivia sighed again. She nodded her thanks and headed over to the car. They had to return to the station and examine the mask.
