Hello everyone
I thought it might be a good thing to create a topic in this thread (and maybe in all of the characters threads) that regroups all of Mariska's articles (different from the small news articles that gives us infos on the upcoming episodes like in Fin's thread for example).
What do you think about it Mods? Please feel free to move or change this post, it's just a suggestion.
Here I found a new Mariska article:
Recently, Newswatch's Ann Komis traveled to the Big Apple and met with Mariska Hargitay.
Hargitay plays Detective Olivia Benson on NBC's "Law and Order: Special Victim's Unit." But you can say, acting is in her blood.
Hargitay father's Mickey Hargitay was once Mr. Universe and an actor in his own right. He acted in "Mae West's Muscle Man Revue" in New York.
One night, Mariska's mom caught that act at a dinner club. When her dinner companion asked what she wanted. She responded, a steak and that man on the left. The man on the left was Mickey Hargitay. And the woman who placed her order, Jayne Mansfield.
Sadly, the two divorced for a second time in 1964.
Three years later, little Mariska was asleep in the back seat of her mother's car when the car slammed into a semi.
Jayne Mansfield, her boyfriend and driver were killed instantly. If you look closely, you can see Mariska's zigzag scar around her right eye. Other than her scar, she has no memories of that accident.
Hargitay, when asked what she remembers about her mother, responds, "Not too much. I was so young, you know. I have a couple little memories, but not a whole lot. And it's hard when you're sort of bombarded with photos and clips and things to know what's a memory, or what's a piece of film that I've seen. That's hard."
Despite who her parents were, there was actually a doubt in Hargitay's mind that she would not become an actress.
Hargitay says, "All the way through high school, I wanted to be a diplomat. We traveled a lot. We were very fortunate. So I wanted to travel the world and do something with languages."
Good call since she speaks her father's native language, Hungarian, and is fluent in French and Italian. But, Mariska took a detour after acting in her senior high play.
Hargitay responds, "And I got the bug. And I had so much fun. And I felt so comfortable on stage. I said, 'This is what I want to do.' So, I went to UCLA to the theater arts department, and the rest is history."
She actually began her acting career on the TV series "Falcon Crest" back in 1982. And do you remember her as Cynthia Hooper, Dr Green's love interest on "ER"?
Hargitay sometimes misses playing Hooper. "Up to getting this show, that was my favorite part or character I ever played," says Hargitay.
But playing SVU's Detective Olivia Benson is very different from Cynthia Hooper.
"My favorite thing that's ever happened in my career, I was at the NBC press tour and somebody mentioned, somebody in the audience, raised their hand and spoke about "ER." And somebody else said, 'You weren't on "ER."' And they said, "Who were you on "ER?"' They challenged me. I was Cynthia Hooper, Dr Green's girlfriend. And it took them a moment, and they couldn't believe it was the same person."
Hargitay continues, "I do look different." It was like a whole new person came out. "I got a whole bunch of people in there."
And no doubt, we'll see that bunch of people in the years to come.
Hargitay is married to actor Peter Hermann, and they're expecting their first child.
