Mariska is on the cover of the May/June issue of COOKIE Magazine with some Girl Scouts. This is a parenting magazine and should be available April 26th. Here is a link: www.cookiemag.com/magazineClick on "sneak peek" on the right side of the screen for more pictures and an article. The article is hard to read but SpyBarbie at the SFNfansite has graciously transcribed the article. Go to svu.jconserv.net and check the Mariska Hargitay Thread-Cookie Magazine Topic about 1/2 way down the first page.

I would love to see her back on SVU. By the way, I got my copy of COOKIE Magazine today at Barnes & Noble. I didn't think it would be available until April 26th, but I had to go to Barnes & Noble anyway and there it was!

For those who don't have accounts on the site, here's the transcrips as posted by SpyBarbie: Smart Cookie Awards Motherhood carries with it a bewildering calculus. You can't believe the love you feel for your child, and yet the same love extends for miles - a universe - beyond the boundary of your own family. For our first annual Smart Cookie Awards, we honor 11 mothers who have made a difference in the world for women and children. Some have given their whole professional lives to their causes; other simply saw a need and did something about it. But all these women - whether it's Maria Otero helping women across the globe receive life-changing loans or Mariska Hargitay aiding survivors of sexual assault - looked outside their own families to acknowledge a greater one. So go ahead, be inspired Mariska Hargitay - Actor, founder and president of the Joyful Heart Foundation joyfulheartfoundation.org Mother of August, 10 months When Mariska Hargitay began playing Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU (the NBC spin-off about victims of sexual crimes) she didn't receive the usual kind of fan mail. "It wasn't 'Oh I love your show, you're so pretty'", she says. "It was women disclosing things to me, saying 'Can you help me?' These girls who were so lonely and had nowhere to go were writing to some woman on TV". With the help of a friend, Hargitay transformed her fan website, Mariska.com, into a self-esteem site, providing resources for rape victims and women struggling with issues like depression and addiction. "I wanted it to feel like your favorite big sister," she says. "Someone who would never turn on you". In 2002, Hargitay founded the Joyful Heart Foundation (JHF) to provide healing therapies for survivors of sexual assault. "We don't try to reinvent the wheel, because there are so many fantastic organizations out there already," she says. Instead, JHF uses alternative methods like art therapy and swimming with dolphins in Hawaii, "Oftentimes, victims of sexual assault just shut the door - the lights go out," Hargitay continues, "because swimming with dolphins was euphoric for me, I thought if I could share it with the victims it might help them open up and understand that one terrible experience does not need to define them." Hargitay's training as a rape counselor helped her gain the understanding. While she initially became certified to research her role on SVU. "The training changed my life," she says. "When someone has that kind of story, she's so fearful of being rejected. The key is to listen and let her know that there's support - and that, if she doesn't give up on herself, no one else will." When she speaks to the Girl Scouts - another of the former Brownie's favorite organizations - Hargitay sticks with the theme of overcoming personal attacks. "I tell them my weaknesses are the reason I am what I am today. They are what made me work harder." On top of all this, Hargitay and husband Peter Hermann (who's an actor) are the parents of a 10-month-old August, but being a new mother has refueled her far more than it has unraveled her. "I think becoming a parent evolves you. I wanted to be a mother so badly, so no matter what's going on when I see him, it's a wash. Nothing is in my heart more than he is - he just wipes the slate clean." Also, the main reason for her appearance in the magazine is probaby [limegreen]this[/limegreen]: she is one of the celebs getting a "Smart Cookie" award for mothers who are changing the world.
