LesbiaNation Top Ten Women We Love of 2007
01.03.08
By Shane Cassidy
Every December, we ask you to vote on your Most Loved women of the year. You voted, we counted, and here it is—the LesbiaNation Top Ten Women We Love of 2007. From sword-wielding women warriors to sci-fi babes, hot police detectives to L Word lesbians, our winners this year all spawned from the television genre. Come on in and see who you chose to be our Most Loved woman of 2007!
Our Women We Love lists in 2007 featured beautiful and talented women of all persuasions. Artists, musicians, athletes, filmmakers, movie stars and television celebrities. After the votes were tallied for the year, however, every one of our final top ten came from, naturally, the boob tube. Competition throughout the year was tough, but some ladies never moved from the top five and several re-appeared again and again throughout the year. In the end, however, only one can take home our top prize of Most Loved Woman of 2007.
And the winners are:
10. Kathryn Morris
Before wowing prime-time viewers with her work-obsessed detective Lilly Rush on Cold Case, this luminous blondie flew on to the gaydar as Najara, an evil warrior who tries to drive a wedge between Xena and Gabrielle on the lesbian cult-phenom Xena. Kathryn upped the lesbian-appeal ante as a hotshot pilot Lt. Annalisa "Stinger" Lindstrom on Pensacola: Wings of Gold—sporting coveralls mind you. Now that's more Top Gun than Tom Cruise could hope for and speaking of which, Kathryn played his beleaguered wife in Minority Report. A work-a-holic, Kathryn recently wrapped filming on the dark comedy Assassination of a High School President, co-starriing Bruce Willis, gay fave Mischa Barton and Itty Bitty Titty Committee's Melonie Diaz. She's an action star and a sci-fi babe, what more could you want?
9. Rose Rollins
Smoldering Rose Rollins is back as The L Word's hog-riding soldier girl Tasha. This season Rose's strong silent type battles a hot-button "Don't Ask Don't Tell" court case opposite Top Gun's Kelly McGillis. But never fear, season five promises plenty of Rose 's Tasha throwing down with Leisha Hailey's loquaicious Alice. A self-confessed tomboy, Rose played Allison Janney's C.J.'s assistant on The West Wing, beforing landing the plumb role on The L Word. The stunner who plays soft-butch Tasha kicked off her career with a modeling stint. Rose's big-screen roles include parts in Undisputed with Wesley Snipes and 13 Moons—with one Ms. Jennifer Beals. Appealing more and more to her gay gal fans, Rose played it tough in Ourchart.com's web-based romp Girltrash, directed by Angela Robinson. Although she's got the acting cred to star in just about anything, after her steamy sex scenes with Leisha Hailey, her lesbian fans won't let her leave The L Word without a fight.
8. Jorja Fox
Since she starred on ER as lesbian medical intern Maggie Doyle, we've had Jorja Fox on our minds. An outspoken vegetarian and PETA supporter, Jorja's only upped her appeal as troubled investigator Sara Sidle on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. And rumor has it that Jorja likes the ladies in real life. Whether the rumors are true or not, Jorja's got hordes of lesbian fans. Sadly, Jorja's kissed CSI goodbye, but with smarts and natural good looks, Jorja won't be out ot the spotlight for long.
7. Teryl Rothery
Vancouver native and Sci-fi darling Teryl Rothery won over the ladies' hearts playing sadistic interrogator Dr. Janet Frasier on Stargate: SG-1. This cat-eyed, hottie took no prisoners on the show or with her fans. If that's not enough for the Sci-fi aficionados, Teryl appeared on Babylon 5: The Lost Tales—Voices in the Dark and that's just the beginning of Teryl's laundry list of roles. She's appeared in White Noise 2: The Light, Stephen King's The Dead Zone, and on the small screen in Showtime's short-lived Huff and as Linda the Realtor in the gallows-humor show Dead Like Me. With a reputation for tackling slightly odd or sadistic roles, Teryl's not afraid to bare her fine acting chops.
6. Leisha Hailey
L Word cutie and real live lesbian Leisha Hailey turned 36 last July, but we think she doesn't look a day over gorgeous. Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey's band Uh Huh Her released their new EP I See Red last year and in between shooting The L Word in Vancouver, Leisha and Camila have been packing houses with rabid fans of the band. Back as stylish and witty Alice for another season, Leisha's a tried and true part of the show. Leisha's also co-starring in the 2008 film La Cucina with Mad Men's Christina Hendricks. Last year Leisha proved her mettle with her fans hauling in the number-one spot on AfterEllen.com's Hot 100 list.
5. Jennifer Beals
The L Word's power lesbian with the big heart and the show's anchor, Ms. Jennifer Beals has proven that she's no "Flash" in the pan. An 80's icon, who made welding synonymous with off-the-shoulder sweatshirts in Flashdance, Jennifer has re-invented herself as Bette Porter, the type-A Ivy League educated lesbian that everyone want to sleep with-especially when she's baring her shoulders in a tank top. And from season five trailers, fans will get plenty of action from Jennifer to enjoy. Fans who've worn out their L Word DVD's can get an eyeful of the Yale grad in several indie films she made in the 90's, including Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle and the gay-friendly sleeper hit The Anniversary Party—major hot shoulder action here.
4. Amanda Tapping
As Colonel Samantha Carter on the long-running sci-fi series Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis, Amanda Tapping has secured a hard-core sci-fi and gay girl following. A smart and sexy Brit, Tapping's Carter is a take no holds barred type who's also made the girls swoon with some Sapphic subtext around her relationship with the show's late Dr. Janet Frasier (Teryl Rothery). Tapping's tapped for two more Stargate projects including Stargate: The Continuum and Stargate: The Ark of Truth.
3. Mariska Hargitay
A consistent top contender on our Women We Love list, Law & Order: SVU sex pistol Mariska Hargitay says on her blog at Mariska.com that she's mostly a girly girl but there are days when she wants to throw on the Chuck Taylors and teach her son how to kick a soccer ball. And that sentiment is not lost on her lesbian fans who've lusted over her since she debuted as the tough cop in the tight-knit shirts, Olivia Benson, in 1999. Mariska's been kicking bad guy ass and inspiring much admiration not just from lusting fans but from Emmy Award and Golden Globes voters. Not just a pretty face, Hargitay co-founded the Joyful Heart Foundation, an organization that provides support to women who have been sexually assaulted.
2. Renee O'Connor
Blonde bombshell Renee O'Connor has gone mano y mano with former co-star Lucy Lawless on our list but she's always the winner to her legions of lesbian fans. Renee recently wrapped filming the SciFi Channel movie, The Genesis Code and released her long-awaited film Diamonds and Guns on DVD. In 2008, fans will get to see Renee in the supernatural scare-flick Boogeyman 2. If that's not enough Renee to go around, she's signed on for the action / adventure flick Judges: Devil's Bayou. Last year, Renee wowed her Sapphic fans when she showed up at the Power Up Gala as a presenter and at the ultimate lesbian party—Dinah Shore. Renee was the Most Loved Woman on our list for 2006, but lost out on the title this year by a nose.
1. Lucy Lawless
Best known for her many years as the quintessential warrior princess, Lucy Lawless garnered a huge lesbian fan following as Xena. The show's Sapphic subtext, combined with Lawless sexy form made the women swoon from coast to coast. After Xena, Lawless took a bit of a break to spend time with her kids and film some terrible B-movies. But soon she re-emerged into the limelight with a stint on Celebrity Duets, where she wowed the judges with her voice as well as her ravishing looks. Lucy broke away from her Xena steroetype by dying her hair blonde and going femme and the result was a whole new musical career.
Fans are salivating waiting for Lucy's return to the small screen as Cylon D'Anna Biers on the upcoming season of Battlestar Galactica. Still, between seasons, impossibly high cheek-boned babe Lucy's thrown her fans the occasional fix like guest-starring in Burn Notice last summer and with the occasional singing gig. Lucy's also signed on for voice-parts for the animated films Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight and as the voice of Wonder Woman for Justice League: The New Frontier. While Lucy's voice is certainly smokin', it's a tease to think of Lucy as Wonder Woman but without getting a shot at ogling her in the sexy costume. The gorgeous kiwi also continues to lend a helping hand to charitable organizations and tantalize her fans with personal messages on her lucylawlessfanclub.com blog.
Lawless is known as much for her altruistism and activism as for her acting & singing, which makes her more than deserving to be our Most Loved Woman of 2007!
That's a wrap for our Most Loved Women of 2007. If you're still looking for more hot voting action for the new year, head on over to our Women We Love January list—featuring the ladies of The L Word!
