Relationships on SVU
Elliot
Where He Stands
Elliot Stabler started out the series with a wife, four kids, and seemed well adjusted. When viewers were introduced to them, they clearly saw that Elliot kept his work at work. This would seem like a good strategy for the detective, seeing as his job is gruesome in nature and it isn’t really bedtime story material. “Ok kids, bed time story. Once upon a time there was a pompus !@#$%^ that your father arrested, and he…” Over time, however, viewers have seen Kathy become more and more agitated with Elliot and his work habits. Yes, he is married to the job, but remember, you knew you were getting into this Kathy dear! You married a Marine…
On the other hand, anyone who is an avid watcher of SVU knows that Elliot has his crisis and anger management issues. Here meaning that he has neither of those two abilities. He shuts out people, does not involve his wife in ANYTHING pertaining to his job, which leaves her in the dark with no maneuvering room what so ever. His hours are crazy, he often crashes at the crib, and like every other detective on the force, is married to his job.
SVU’s Solution
Divorce! Elliot is a cop, has his problems, can’t control his anger, but is still a loving father none-the-less. But still, the show goes down the predictable yellow-brick road, suddenly exclaiming in one episode “Oh, Kathy took the kids to stay at her parents.” Not only did that come as a non-shock, it came from a sleazy defense lawyer no less! Way too predictable for SVU’s standards. Give the happily married cops in the world some representation! In terms of being appealing, just because Elliot wasn’t on the market did not make him any less delicious! The viewers still loved him, loved his wife and kids. Because he was married, it made him a stronger character, and made him one of the shining examples of how it IS possible to have a career and family at the same time.
What Should Be Done
Let the man have his family for goodness sakes! It has already been established that Elliot does not have custody of the kids… but this does not (necessarily) mean that the divorce has been finalized. The kids still need a place to live, with one parent or the other, while their parents are divorced. Let Kathy and Elliot get back together, let them work out their problems for a few episodes. Elliot should not have to fall victim to the vicious cop vs. relationship monster! No matter how long it takes to reconcile, Elliot is one commodity that should be permanently off the market.
Olivia
Where She Stands
Get some, get gone. No, not Faith, Olivia! Surprising right? The “get some, get gone” motto does not seem like it should fit Olivia. After all, she is possibly the most compassionate detective on the squad. She is a product of rape, so probably also the most sensitive to some of the situations the squad faces. She can identify with victims, and sees all types of relationships, good, bad, and just plain creepy. Olivia, of all people, should be the one to not sleep around. She’s been with the unstable Brian Cassidy (probably one of her biggest relationship mistakes ever), the gay ADA, the controlling U.S. Marshall, the role-play journalist, and most recently was making googly eyes and jumping through hoops for the lurking journalist. Quite the list; none of these men being stable, reliable partners. Some credit goes to the job, because some men either bolt or are way too interested. And having been with so many, the impression is made that Olivia does not trust men easily.
SVU’s Solution
Nothing. They show has done nothing to give Olivia some stability in her life. In a couple episodes she is on a date, only to have to leave to work a case. (Not that this is a bad thing necessarily, because we get to see her in a fabulous dress). Toying around with all these men makes her seem irresponsible. Being an SVU detective, she should know better than to go out with anyone, and many anyone’s at that. And, just a note to the writers: Stop dropping Olivia baby hints as well!!!
What Should Be Done
A steady boyfriend…or girlfriend, there certainly would not be any objections to that, is what Olivia needs. Give her someone to lean on; someone that can deal with the job without being more interested than they should be.
Munch
Where He Stands
This one might be his own fault. With her sarcastic nature and constant crazy conspiracy theories, not just anyone would be a match for Munch. But out of his three wives, you would think that one would be compatible. After all, underneath all the sarcasm and conspiracy is a sweet, loving guy. To come up with all of these theories, the guy has to be smart as well!
SVU’s Solution
Right along the line, Munch seems to have fallen into the SVU sag: AKA, he is available. The show has made no hints about giving Munch someone to spend his days with.
What Should Be Done
Pair him off with Amy Solway!. Not necessarily a romantic pairing, but as a companion for Munch. They compliment each other, and as we’ve scene in “Painless” and “Parts”, Munch is willing to go in circles for her. And it could be a romantic paring… age smage!
Fin
Where He Stands
We don’t know much about Fin. In any aspect of his life really, but especially in the romance department. We know that at least he has an ex-girlfriend, because he has a son. But nothing in the works as a current main squeeze. He has mentioned girlfriends before, but no one that we have ever met.
What Should Be Done
Fin does not really need an on-screen romance. It just would not compliment his character. A mention here and there is ok, but other than that, he has kept his work at work and his home at home, and that is where they should stay. Balanced man is he.
Cragen
Where He Stands
Cragen is currently in one of those unfortunate positions where he had found the great love of his life, Marge, only to lose her tragically, in this case to a plane crash. Cragen also had his personal problems; he was an alcoholic for much of his early career, but sobered up after pulling a gun on a pedestrian. (Wikipedia.org) The first time he touched a drink was after the death of his wife. Now, Cragen avoids alcohol all together, and also apparently the dating scene. With the death of his wife was also the death of any romantic relationship to be had by Cragen.
What Should Be Done
Like Munch, Cragen needs some kind of partner. No one, especially in this case a SVU detective should have to bear life and its cruel lessons alone. Give Cragen a companion, someone he goes out to dinner with to unload, someone he seeks advice from, an old mentor from the police force. There is a plethora of positive role models to give Cragen, and plenty of opportunities to make him one for some misguided soul.
As for Casey, Huang, and Warner, we know diddley. Even less than we know about Fin, if that is at all possible. Amazing. Get them in there too!!!
Casey
Where She Stands
We don’t know much about Casey at all. The only clue that viewers have received as to the nature of her romantic life is the one line from “Abomination” (5.08) (After a boy has said “He always said that men were more fun”): “Yeah, I agree with James.” Implying, then, that she had at one point, a boyfriend. He is now apparently long gone, per her line in “Night” (6.20): “I’m not seeing anyone.”
SVU’s Solution
Casey has been on the receiving end of some brutal attacks. First being attacked in “Night”, then being held at gunpoint in “Raw” (7.06) and having a rough time adjusting to the squad in general.
What Should Be Done
Casey has a mentor; viewers have seen her interact with Judge Mary Clark in “Abomination” and EADA turned Judge Elizabeth Donnelly has certainly given her a fair chunk of advice (not all of it necessarily good, but advice none-the-less). What has not been seen, however, is Casey interacting with just a plain friend, or a boyfriend/girlfriend. (Like Olivia, it is thought by many in the SVU fan zone that Casey is “flexible”.)
Huang
Where He Stands
From what has been seen from his character, there is no hint of a relationship, or even a social life, on Dr. Huang’s agenda. His only appearances other than to give medical advice is… to give more medical advice. However, is this a bad thing? Huang is adored by many, but is more of an accessory character. He does not appear in every episodes, and unless there is some episode that for some reason pertains personally to him, then there is no reason to give him a huge personal life.
What Should Be Done
Leave it as is. Random details would be acceptable, as long as they are relevant.
Warner
Where She Stands
Warner is yet another character that does not have a personal life, therefore rounding out the cast. It was stated in the episode “Blast” (7.13) that she had a child, and implied in another, though it is not clear in which particular episode, that she is married (This information also available at Wikipedia.org). This is good for Warner; it would make her the only member of the squad to have a current, normal, healthy relationship. All at once.
What Should Be Done
LEAVE IT! For goodness sakes, do not touch it. At this point it would be like a child, who has touched the stove once while it was on, doing it again. Set the good example that it is possible to have a job like a Medical Examiner, and still have a healthy personal life.
Elliot
Where He Stands
Elliot Stabler started out the series with a wife, four kids, and seemed well adjusted. When viewers were introduced to them, they clearly saw that Elliot kept his work at work.
