Day One's 35th Anniversary Luncheon
The Westin Providence
November 13, 2008
12:00 Noon
Featuring Mariska Hargitay from "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"
KEYNOTE SPEAKER, MARISKA HARGITAY
Mariska Hargitay headlines the television crime drama "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" as the unit's veteran Detective Olivia Benson. Ms. Hargitay is a 2006 Emmy winner for Lead Actress in a Drama Series and a 2005 Golden Globe winner for Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Her distinguished career includes starring roles in television, movies, and theatre.
In addition to being an award winning actress, Ms. Hargitay is a tireless advocate for victims of sexual abuse. Ms. Hargitay says that her inspiration for her character on "SVU" comes from the thousands of victims of sexual assault who don't have a voice and need to be heard, and the people who have dedicated their lives to helping these victims. Her work on SVU prompted her to become involved with several rape crisis centers as well as founding her own foundation called the Joyful Heart Foundation to assist real life survivors of sexual abuse. Ms. Hargitay's support for Children's Advocacy Centers was featured in the April 2008 edition of Redbook magazine.
DAY ONE, 35 YEARS WORKING TO END SEXUAL VIOLENCE
Day One was established in 1973 by a group of women concerned about the increasing problem of sexual assault and the lack of services and information available to victims and the public. Today, Day One provides services to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and other violent crimes and educates the public throughout Rhode Island. Day One's mission is to reduce the prevalence of sexual abuse and violence, and to support and advocate for those affected by it. Nearly 75% of the victims of sexual abuse receiving services at Day One are children.
