Chris Meloni: My "Law & Order: SVU" contract is up at season's end

How long does Chris Meloni want to keep doing "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"?
"I'm very happy right now, very satisfied," Meloni told me Saturday in Orlando. "We'll see when and if they come back to me, because my contract is up. We'll take it from there. I don't know. I'm just doing this season. We'll see what decisions NBC makes, which will force decisions on my part."
Does he hope to be back? "Sure," he said.
The original "Law & Order" has gone through numerous cast changes. But Meloni and Emmy-winner Mariska Hargitay are crucial to the appeal of "SVU."
"I think they [NBC] understand it and appreciate it," Meloni said.
He added that there have been no talks yet about his future. "This is not a situation of trying to play coy," he said. "They're just dealing with what their lineup is going to be, what their financial situation is."
"SVU" is among the few series still scoring strong ratings for NBC. But with Jay Leno joining prime time lineup at 10 p.m. weeknights next fall, "SVU" will have to move earlier. The drama should do just fine at 9 p.m., Meloni said.
"I don't think it's going to affect us at all," Meloni said. "It's been on the air 10 years. It has a pretty loyal fan base."
And what is it about the Meloni-Hargitay team that brings in fans?
"There's a certain amount of sexual tension, but that wasn't the main focus of the show," Meloni said. "I think it just kind of evolved into that thing and a lot of time in the minds of viewers. It was never intentionally put forward that way. But I guess it's just the chemistry that Mariska and I give off."
What happens if that chemistry ends?
