SVU : Sexy Verdict Unanimous
by Michael Ausiello
Anyone surprised by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit's emergence last season
as the most-watched version of the franchise need look no further than its
arresting leads. As detectives Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson, Christopher
Meloni and Mariska Hargitay have become TV's most dynamic cop duo. Whether
commanding a crime scene or looking out for each other, they're immensely watchable
and, well, hotter than a red-light district. Recently the actors took a break
from filming to talk about life after SVU, awards shows and making out. Not
necessarily in that order.
TV Guide: Fans want to see Benson and Stabler hook up. Are you pushing for
that as well?
Hargitay: They want us together bad. He's such the father figure and I'm such
the mother figure, so all the kids want mommy and daddy to get together. It's
so sweet. But we don't want to turn the show into a soap opera.
Meloni: That'll be the day that the shark tank has been jumped. You can't
have it.
Hargitay: I love that our chemistry is palpable and that everyone feels it.
It's a gift. And it's been that way since the day we met. On and off screen,
we've always had the same sense of humor. The minute we met, we clicked.
TV Guide: Do you guys hang out outside of work?
Hargitay: We've been to other countries.
TV Guide: Do tell…
Hargitay: We went to Cuba for Thanksgiving, Hawaii for Christmas…
TV Guide: With your respective spouses?
Hargitay: Yeah.
Meloni: But don't think we didn't [do it].
Hargitay: [Laughs] We [did it] twice. We got that out of the way, and the
show has been great since.
TV Guide: SVU was the No. 1 Law & Order show last season. Do you feel a
competitiveness with the other shows?
Meloni: Healthy competition.
Hargitay: Very healthy. We're all in it together.
Meloni: Now if they beat us in softball, our souls are crushed.
TV Guide: What's the best part of being on SVU?
Hargitay: When you find out that this show has really changed someone's life.
Meloni: When a rape survivor comes up to you, hugs you and whispers in your
ear, "I'm a survivor. Thank you."
