I appreciate that there are some very real sentiments in that article, both that it's difficult to come to terms with how parents could treat their children in these ways, and that you can't always "fix" the problem, especially when you aren't trained as a mental health care worker or social worker. I volunteer in a similar environment, where kids can disclose a lot of things going on at home, but at the end of the week we have to let go of them and trust that the resources we've set up with them at home will take care of them. I'm always glad to see people with influence taking the time to give what and how they can.

My mom used to be a social worker and she used to work in this classroom with kids that were abused. And every time she came home, she'd just weep. It was so hard for her not to take them all home with her and keep them safe. Eventually she left the school then resigned from the job completely because it so hard to handle (emotionally). I guess that's why she finds it hard to watch SVU with me...

My hat is off to Mariska and the other 2 ladies for getting involved. Mariska has really put her money where her mouth is so to speak in her tireless efforts on behalf of the abused.
