Sorry about the delay everyone but I have been a little busy those days!
Here comes Chapter Four
The day had been long and stressing for the two detectives so they were somewhat relieved to see the evening come. Somewhat because they were still unaware of what should have happened. Nothing strange or definitely unusual had been brought to their attention, they hadn’t learnt anything new or earth shattering. So they wondered about the whole situation for the umpteenth time today.
“I don’t get it” whispered Olivia to her partner over a big pack of files.
“Me neither! The day is going to an end and we’re still in the dark about everything”
“We’re soon gonna have to check out so my guess is that, maybe, we have to learn something that is not work related!” she concluded
“Good theory partner” all day long they had addressed each other deliberately avoiding names, choosing instead to use the word ‘partner’ to prevent any inevitable slip.
“I don’t know, maybe… I can’t think about this anymore” Olivia pinched the bridge of her nose wishing the tension away. She doubted everything, she had theorized so much today that her head was spinning.
“Well anyway we’ll soon know if you’re right” he shrugged. She looked at him with an air of resignation and went straight back to reading her DD5.
Approaching the moody duo Fin called out to them. “Hey guys! Wanna go and have a drink?”
“Thanks Fin but I’ll pass” answered a tired Elliot.
“Same here” added a slightly apologetic Olivia.
“Ok! So it’s you and me man” he concluded turning his attention back to Munch.
“Only if you’re paying, and I’d like to warn you I’m not cheap” he said waggling his eyebrows.
Grunting at the characteristic playfulness of his partner he looked back at the other detectives “Night guys, and don’t work too late”
“Yeah we wouldn’t want you to be out of the loop tomorrow” probed an enigmatic Munch while looking intently at them.
“Thanks” replied Elliot sincerely, completely missing his partner suspicious look in Munch direction.
“Good night” intoned Olivia and Elliot at the departing pair.
“Did you see how Munch was acting today” she asked unnerved.
“No, why?” he answered nonchalantly.
“I don’t know. I felt like he was aware of something. He told me he found us both to be very different today.”
“What do you mean?”
“He said ‘you seem a little off, the two of you’” she sounded a tad anxious.
“Well, you know him, he could smell conspiracy miles away, maybe he’s already developing one on the government brainwashing us overnight, who knows! Don’t worry Liv, whatever he might think, everything will be over tomorrow.” He tried to reassure her.
“Yes you must be right” she didn’t feel completely convinced, but she had to admit that it seemed impossible for anyone to guess what had really happened today.
“Yeah, you’ll see” he smiled.
“Elliot, Olivia! What are you two still doing here?” questioned Cragen as he came out of his office.
“We’re finishing some paperwork, cap”
“Well it will still be here tomorrow, go and take some rest” he ordered with a fatherly expression on his face “especially you Elliot, you have a wife and kids to go to, I don’t want to see you spend another night in the crib, do you get it” he firmly stated.
“Yes captain” Olivia amended.
“Good! Goodnight” he wished exiting the squad room.
“Goodnight” they echoed.
“Will you be ok here or do you wanna crash at my place” she proposed out of concern.
“No it’s fine, thanks! Go and have a good night” he said smiling at her “plus I think it might be necessary for us to be apart, who knows maybe that’s why nothing has happened yet!”
“Maybe” she agreed pensively.
“Will you go right back to your place?” he asked.
“Nah, I think I’ll go and grab a bite somewhere, like always my fridge is totally empty” she laughed lightly.
“Ok, then have a good time and please be careful” he warned gently.
“Thanks, you too, watch out for strange eerie lights” she winked.
“I will” he smirked.
Looking at her retreating figure …well technically my retreating figure… he sighed, wondering what would happen next.
He didn’t have to wait for long when 10 minutes later he heard footsteps approaching. Raising his head from a very disturbing file his breath caught in his throat. There, in front of him, stood an anxious looking Kathy.
“Kathy?” he breathed tenderly.
“Olivia” she saluted frowning slightly, somewhat perplexed by the way the detective had addressed to her.
“What are you doing here?” he asked regaining some of his composure as he realized that she didn’t see him but Olivia.
“Well, I was here to…I mean… I wanted to see Elliot” she was fidgeting.
“Oh I see” he smiled.
“But obviously, he’s not here” she concluded disappointed.
Elliot felt panic rising inside at the realization. Kathy must be wondering where I am, I must say something or she will start imagining things. Thinking as quickly as he could to find a good excuse he spurted out “He went to grab a bite” at her inquiring look he quickly added “I was not hungry, I think I had one too many doughnut this afternoon” he giggled nervously.
She looked at ‘Olivia’ strangely but decided to let it go. “Ok then…I will leave you to your…” she gestured towards the documents sprawled on his table. As she turned around to leave he exclaimed.
“Please stay!” he realized too late how desperate it must have sounded when she fixed him with a surprised gaze. So he added in a calmer voice “Do you want to talk? I mean I feel bad about this, between you and Elliot, I wish I could help”.
The look in ‘Olivia’ eyes was one of concern and compassion and Kathy felt suddenly compelled to smile. “Thank you” she said coming back toward the detective. Making up her mind she sat in front of ‘Olivia’. “I don’t know where to start” she confessed sheepishly.
“The beginning would be good” he comforted smiling. But as an after thought he blurted out worriedly “who’s watching the kids?”
Laughing for the first time Kathy exclaimed “God Olivia! You sound so much like Elliot, it’s frightening!”
The detective blushed slightly at this comment “well I imagine that it’s a side effect of being partners for so long” he covered.
“I guess so” she smiled warmly at ‘her’ “my sister is with them” she reassured.
“Ok then, whatever you want to talk about, I’m here to listen Kathy” he stated gently.
“Thanks” she grinned.
“That’s what friends are for”.
Entering the restaurant Olivia soon realized that she would have to wait long for a table. The small room was packed with chatty customers that were for the most part regulars.
She pondered her choices for a minute, wait at the bar for a table or go for the diner at the end of the street. Feeling a bit restless, she opted for the second and as she turned to leave, she heard a familiar voice calling “Elliot?”
Turning around she was faced with a smiling Casey looking at her expectantly. She grinned at the redhead and said. “Hey Casey, nice to see you here”.
“Did you just arrive or are you leaving?” she inquired friendly.
“Oh uh! I wanted to have dinner but they seem to be full so I was going to leave for another place.” There was a hint of disappointment in her voice that didn’t go unnoticed by the attorney.
“Is it so? Well then don’t go please, there’s a lot of place at my table” she assured.
“Thank you Casey but I wouldn’t want to impose”
“Non sense Elliot please be my guest” she took him by the arm directing him towards the left side of the room.
“Oh ok” she grinned widely at the proposition. Ok Olivia keep it cool, she thinks you’re Elliot so watch out for what you’re going to say!
Approaching the table Olivia soon noticed that Casey was not alone tonight; the same guy that she had seen hugging her yesterday was sitting there, slowly getting up at the sight of Casey’s return. Oh god! Not again? She found her mood quickly coming down from the little cloud it had been on a couple of minutes ago.
“Elliot, meet Roger, Roger this is Elliot a colleague and friend” both ‘men’ shook hands firmly, Olivia taking advantage of her new physical strength to squeeze a bit more than necessary, foolishly rejoicing in the little wince she elicited from her ‘rival’. I know I’m not being rational here, but who said I had to be! She smirked.
